Lab Services

Lab testing is a key tool your physician will use to evaluate your health before ordering additional tests. By testing your blood, urine, other bodily fluid, or tissue sample, a doctor can check your overall health, screen for disease, rule out other conditions, or monitor a disease or a treatment. At FMHQ, we will order the tests and explain the results to you before laying out a plan for future action.

Blood Testing

When we do a physical, we will request a complete blood count that measures different substances in your blood to give insights into your health. After a technician takes a small amount of blood from you, the results evaluate your:

  • Red blood cells, which carry oxygen from the lungs throughout the body
  • White blood cells, comprised of five types which fight infection (a CBC with differential breaks shown information on each type)
  • Platelets, which aid blood clotting
  • Hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells responsible for carrying oxygen
  • Hematocrit, which measures the percentage of red blood cells

Typically, an abnormal red blood count, hemoglobin, or hematocrit level may indicate heart disease, anemia, or iron deficiency. A low white count suggests an autoimmune disorder, bone marrow disorder, or cane, while a high cell count indicates the presence of an infection or a reaction to medications. If your results come back abnormal, we will first ask you about your diet, medications, how active you are, stress levels, and other things that may have influenced the results. We may then ask you to repeat the test or order other tests to rule out potential issues.

Other Tests

Common types of tests include a blood glucose test to monitor diabetes, a Pap test to rule out cervical cancer, an HPV test to rule out infection, or a complete blood panel to evaluate how various organs and systems are functioning. The results come back as positive, negative, or inconclusive.
